What is Deep Research?
Deep Research is an agentic AI capability optimized for extensive online research. Once given a prompt, it autonomously navigates the internet, analyzes vast amounts of text, images, and PDFs, and compiles structured reports. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman describes it as a significant step toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), emphasizing its ability to create new knowledge by effectively synthesizing existing information.
Powered by a specialized version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o3 model, Deep Research goes beyond simple data retrieval. It applies reasoning, adapts its search strategy based on findings, and even backtracks when necessary—mirroring the way human researchers refine their inquiries.
How Deep Research Works
OpenAI trained Deep Research using end-to-end reinforcement learning, allowing it to execute multi-step information-gathering tasks. The tool is particularly useful for:
