Drake Sues Universal Music Group Over Kendrick Lamar Diss Track

Hip-hop superstar Drake has filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), accusing the label of defamation over Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, “Not Like Us.” The feud between the two artists has now spilled into the legal arena, with allegations of harm to Drake’s reputation and safety.

The Lawsuit: Claims Against UMG

Drake’s lawsuit, filed in New York federal court, claims that UMG knowingly promoted and profited from Lamar’s track despite its inflammatory and false accusations. The song allegedly includes baseless allegations of pedophilia against Drake and encourages vigilante justice.

The lawsuit states that the song’s release had severe real-world consequences. Two break-in attempts and a shooting of a security guard at Drake’s Toronto home were linked to the track’s impact. The resulting online harassment and damage to his reputation have also hurt his brand value as he renegotiates his contract with UMG.

UMG’s Role in the Controversy

The lawsuit focuses on UMG’s involvement rather than Kendrick Lamar himself. Drake accuses the label of prioritizing profit over ethics by promoting and monetizing the track, knowing its claims were both false and dangerous. The filing also alleges that UMG pushed to feature “Not Like Us” at the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show, where Lamar is the headline performer.

UMG Responds

UMG has denied all allegations, calling the lawsuit “untrue and illogical.” In a statement, the company emphasized its long-standing support for Drake, noting its substantial investments in his career and success.

The label also argued that rap battles have traditionally involved controversial and provocative lyrics, and suggested that Drake is trying to silence creative expression through legal action.

The Feud and Its Fallout

The tension between Drake and Lamar is one of hip-hop’s most high-profile rivalries, dating back to public jabs in 2013. The release of “Not Like Us” escalated their feud dramatically, leading to this legal battle.

Drake’s lawyers argue that UMG’s actions caused both personal and professional harm, forcing him to relocate his family for safety. “This lawsuit highlights the consequences of elevating profits over the well-being of artists,” his legal team said in a statement.

What’s Next?

Drake is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and a trial to hold UMG accountable. As the legal case unfolds, it will shine a spotlight on the balance between creative freedom and corporate responsibility in the music industry.
